The northern Costa Blanca has much more to offer
than just long stretches of beach. Because of the landscape and
the climate, the region is a worthwhile destination for cyclists,
and has a lot that is still to be discovered. The especially mild
and stable Mediterranean climate allows sporting activities to take
placed virtually year round. The main features for the visitor are
the varied landscape and culture of the region. The coastal areas
are characterised by endless citrus plantations in fertile valleys,
and alternating dunes, cliffs and sandy beaches. In contrast, mountain
passes, narrow gorges and broad plateaus mark the landscape of the
limestone hinterland mountains, which rise to 1,500 metres above
sea level in the Sierra Aitana.
In this unspoilt and thinly populated region, you encounter solitary "fincas,"
sleepy towns and countless castle ruins, but hardly any cars. With its extremely
romantic coastal roads and passes, or less spectacular mountain roads with
gentle slopes, or its broad plains, the Marina Alta has all kinds of routes
for leisurely bike outings, as well as for sport cyclists, mountain bikers
and racing cyclists. Cyclist events such as the "Vuelta a Valencia"
take place in the winter here. An endless number of well-organised mountain
bike races are another attraction. Normally, the races are carried out over
30km and over an elevation of around 1000 metres. The Autonomous Region of
Valencia has far and away the most mountain bike races in Spain. Because of
the frequency of these events, tourists also have the opportunity to participate.
The mild subtropical climate facilitates bicycle tours virtually all year.
The best times are in spring and autumn, with temperatures between 17 and 23
degrees Celsius. The scenery is more beautiful in the spring with the blooming
of the flowers. Anyone who likes to swim, should go in autumn, as the water
temperature stays above 20 degrees until early November.
We offer our guests a wide range of cycling activities. From light
tours to enjoy the scenery, to more demanding day tours and training
for mountain bike races, followed by joint participation in one
of these events. Sturdy mountain bikes and cross bikes are available
for our precisely arranged tours, or you can bring your own. The
starting point for all tours is the Hotel Los Caballos, which is
located right on a "vía verde," which is a former
railway line converted into bicycle, hiking and horseback riding
paths.
